Gardening Club

On Thursday at lunchtime we had our first gardening club session. We are going to look after the 3 raised gardens on the end of the Maitai unit. First we introduced ourselves and shared what we would like to grow, the tamariki want to grow flowers, roses, pumpkins and apple trees. Then we pulled all the weeds out of the gardens, we put the weeds in a big bin so they could dry out before we compost them. Next week we will add compost to the soil.

Some of the weeds were really hard to pull out!

Tereme and Tevita worked together to finish cleaning up.
Ka pai ō mahi kōrua!

Waste Audit

On Wednesday we carried out an audit of all the waste our school created in one day that would have gone to landfill. Sarah Langi and Lindsey Fish work with the Enviro-Leaders to sort the rubbish into categories and then weigh it.

 Yuck!

How could we reuse our yoghurt pottles?
The whole school had a chance to visit the hall and see our rubbish. Sarah discussed with us ways we could reduce, reuse and recycle our waste.
What a lot of rubbish!

Bottle Bricks

Our Tiaki Taiao Enviro-leaders meet at lunchtime every Tuesday. At the moment we are making bottle bricks for a special bench and pizza oven in the community gardens. We are collecting empty plastic bottles and stuffing them with rubbish collected around the school, including chippie packets, gladwrap and muesli bar wrappers. When the bottles are filled woth as much rubbish as we can fit into them, they will be hard like bricks and perfect for building with!
